The Stocks

The Stocks at Pennington Church

The Stocks situated to the South of South Churchyard wall of St Michaels Church Pennington, have been refurbished after falling into serious disrepair. English Heritage describes them as 2 upright stone posts that take timber boards with leg holes for 2 people. Permission from the Conservation Officer at South Lakeland District Council was sought and replacement on a like for like repair granted. The new ones come complete with new wooden boards, associated metal connector straps / hasps and padlocks.

Their refurbishment was very kindly paid for by Professor Hugh Pennington of Aberdeen University.

The Professor has strong links to Furness and visited the site of the stocks more than 20 years ago with his family. After a more recent visit he contacted our parish clerk with his kind offer of funding. He felt it was as good way to celebrate links to this great part of the world.

If you are out and about in Pennington the stocks are well worth a visit but perhaps not worth trying out.

The stocks at Pennington were visited recently by Professor Hugh Pennington of Aberdeen University and his wife Caroyln (shown in the photo).
